The Art of the Ring Stack
There’s something about a woman who wears a lot of rings. Stacks on stacks of delicate or bold, neutral or colorful, eye-catching or even mesmerizing rings signify that a woman has a story to tell. That she has a certain level of taste that has caused her to accumulate such a collection of beautiful jewelry.
When we think of women who wear ring stacks, major names come to mind. Meghan Markle. The Olsen twins. Alexa Chung. Phoebe Buffay. All of these women have mountains of character, and we tend to think that their ring stacks are simply an extension of their one-of-a-kind aesthetics.
While you may be tempted to run out and buy a handful of rings and test out this trend for yourself, it’s best to be a bit more intentional about your purchases. There is an art to creating a perfect ring stack, and we have a few tips and tricks to help you achieve your ideal look - whether you’re more of a Meghan or a Phoebe.
How to create the perfect ring stack
Decide on a vibe
Are you more inclined to the eccentric and bold, or are you looking for jewelry that will accent your outfit instead of trying to stand out? It’s important to gauge your tolerance for color, detail, and bulk before jumping into the deep end. Otherwise, you’ll end up with a collection of rings that will never be worn. We’ve never heard a sadder story.
Choose your digits
As much as we love a thumb ring for an editorial shoot, it doesn’t make much sense for every day. Our favorite fingers to layer a ring stack on are the middle and ring fingers. They’re not as vital to day-to-day activities, and can serve as great canvases for your ring styling purposes.
How many is too many?
Creating a ring stack involves an intricate balance of size, shape and symmetry. We like to choose an odd number of rings and spread them across a few fingers. If you’re working with smaller rings, feel free to go wild with the quantity. If you’re drawn to larger, bolder pieces, let them stand out among only a few daintier pieces.
Size matters
When creating a ring stack, there are two ways to go. You can either choose one statement-making piece to build a stack around, layering two thin bands with a show stopping stone, or you can choose many similarly sized rings to create a stack that has more visual interest up close. We’ve been known to go either way depending on our mood. The only way you can go wrong is to overload your hand with large pieces - you’ll take away from their individual impact and negate the graceful length of your fingers.
A woman who wears stacks of rings has a story to tell - it’s up to her to decide how her jewelry will convey that message. Whether you go big and bold with a gorgeous stone or dainty and neutral with thin gold rings, you can let your ring stack do the talking.
